The event held under the theme, “Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation at Work,” was to promote safety and healthy workplace.
The conference offered a platform for practitioners, policymakers, and industry to the growing relevance of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools in preventing workplace injuries and fatalities, particularly in high-risk industries like mining, construction, and manufacturing.
Akua A. Berantuo-Armooh, President of SHEQPA-GH, emphasized the critical role that leadership plays in ensuring safety outcomes.
“So for us success will mean that it wouldn’t be just a talk shop but then leaders especially general managers of the mines will take safety seriously. The safety practitioners can not do it alone without the support of general managers as well as the other HODs.
In her view, effective collaboration with leaders is imperative in preventing fatalities and injuries on-site.
“We have come a long way and fatalities shouldn’t be happening in the mining space.
“So for us we want all the industries to take advantage of all the technologies that is coming up. We will not be predictive but we are expecting each site to adopt technologies that will help in preventing fatalities on site.”
She encouraged health and safety practitioners across the industry to collaborate with regulators and managers to ensure safe work at various places.
Mr Richard Kofi Adjei, Chief Inspector of Mines at the Minerals Commission, in an interview said, the day was a reminder to every worker and every organization that safety is non-negotiable.
He underscored the importance of prioritizing safety over cost.
He also called for proper supervision and the provision of appropriate tools to avoid fatalities.
He also said “One key important thing to we the safety practitioners is that when it comes to health and safety cost doesn’t matter so much because safety and health overrides cost.”
According to him, the cost of procuring AI technology and other digital tools should not be a barrier.
