            CAGED REPORTER MOVED TO SAFETY

As part of dialogue process to facilitate the release of the Akwatia-based reporter Ebenezer Ofori Agyei (A.K.A Odiasempa), the Eastern Regional Executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) met with the Regional Police Command today to agree on the way forward for the caged reporter.

We are happy to hear that the Regional Police Command has sent a delegation made up of senior police officer to Akwatia on a fact-finding mission on the matter and same delegation would be at the Kade Magistrates court on Friday to facilitate the reporter’s bail since it would be contempt of court for the police to grant him bail immediately.

After about an hour of deliberation, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alphonse Adu Amanquah, assured the GJA Executives that the Akwatia-based reporter would be given the optimum protection and that not even a strain of hair of the reporter would be tampered with. We hold him to his words.

The Regional Commander assured that his outfit has also taken steps to relocate the journalist from the Akwatia police cells to a safer place (Asamankese) after we raised alarm that it would be dangerous for the reporter to live in the custody of DSP Yaw Agyekum Dankwa since he is the complainant, prosecutor and a custodian in this case.

Meanwhile, the GJA-ER is also making efforts to get legal representation for the incarcerated reporter on Friday at the Kade Magistrates court.

The GJA would like to allay any fears among journalists and media practitioners in the Eastern Region stemming from the Kangaroo action by DSP Yaw Agyekum Dankwa.

We shall continue to protect media practitioners working under the confines of the laws of Ghana.

Signed
Maxwell Kudekor
