E/R - SUHUM: DR. AMPEM DARKO PICKS BEST FARMER'S AWARD AS MCE SURPRISES FARMERS
He is not only known for his prolific research into plant medicine, Dr Ampem Darko popularly known as "commander" was unsurprisingly crowned the best farmer of the 34th national farmers day in the Suhum Municipality. Other award winners when interviewed congratulated Dr Ampem Darko who all unanimously agreed that this award to him is long overdue and that his contribution towards the planting for food and job initiative by his Excellency The President is enormous and deserve to be crowned the Municipality's best farmer.
The following are the bases for his selection as the best farmer by the municipality's agric department:
Cocoa - 25 acres
Oil palm - 17 acres
Orange - 4 acres
Cassava - 7 acres
Maize - 5 acres
Tomatoes - 4acres
Plantain - 4 acres
Cocoyam - 1acre
Coconut - 1 acre
Agro plant - 7 acres
Rabbit - 11
Cattle - 25
Broilers - 100
Goats - 62
Local fowls - 50
He also has been able to provide permanent job for four people and over twenty casual workers.
This year's celebration of the farmers day many consider to be a motivational event to encourage the youth to venture into agriculture as the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Margaret Darko Darkwah and the Assembly rewarded massively the hard work of our feeders.
Dr Ampem Darko, the best farmer took home a brand new tricycle, three radio sets, twenty cutlasses, boxes of key soap, pans sewing machine, five pairs of wellington boot, knapsack spraying machine, boxes of pesticides, mattress, full piece printex material, rain coat and assorted products from chocho industries. Other winners took home all but the tricycle. Some were given in addition wheel barrow, 42" nasco flat screen television and a packet of roofing sheets.
The Municipality's Director of Agric, Madam Akosua Birago thanked the Municipal Chief Executive and her staff for their support for farmers in the Municipality. According to her the assembly has been of great help especially when it comes to rewarding farmers. She pleaded that what the farmers are enjoying from the Assembly now should not be a nine day wonder. Madam Akosua Birago entreated the youth to consider farming in these modern day, as farming has become lucrative business unlike previously.
The Hon MCE in her address commended farmers for their hard work in making sure that "we are fed".
Referring to the overall winner, the Hon MCE debunked the notion that farmers just farm because they chose that as a profession. Instead she believes that some farmers have jobs just as Dr Ampem Darko but they farm because they know that it is the only way that we will be able to feed the world in the future.
The Hon MCE touched by the youngest award winner who is only twenty three years with eight years experience in farming entreated the youth to venture into farming at this their age when they are still strong and energetic.
On behalf of the President His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo, the Hon MCE congratulated all the award winners and to all farmers she said Ayekoo. "Ghana is proud of you", the Hon MCE concluded.
Dr Ampem Darko, the 2018 best farmer on behalf of all farmers in the Municipality especially those who are fortunate to receive awards, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Hon MCE, staff of the Assembly, the Agric Director and her staff for such a special occasion to reward their hard work for supporting the socio-economic development of the Municipality and the nation as a whole.
He considered this honor done them as a motivational tool to attract more of the youth into farming to enable the President's vision of using Agriculture to move Ghana beyond Aid a reality.
In attendance include : the Municipal coordinating director Mr James Martey, the district police commander, the constituency NPP chairman Mr Frederick Ofosu, Loyal ladies, NPP constituency executives, Barima Nartey Onomah, chief of Suhum Ayekotse, Chief and elders of Kwahyia community, Assembly members and staff of the Municipal Assembly.
