DONATION OF ITEMS TO THE PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY UNIT OF KORLEBU TEACHING HOSPITAL
World Child Cancer is an International Non-Governmental Charity Organization, based in the UK and established in 2007. The organization has a branch a branch in Ghana with the office at korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH). World Child Cancer is dedicated to addressing the disparity of cancer care for children across the world. We believe that every child, no matter where they are born should have equal access to the best possible treatment and care.
According to Emmanuel Ayire Adongo, Regional Coordinator, World Child Cancer globally, 300,000 children develop cancer every year, with the majority in Low-and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). It is estimated that about 1,300 Ghanaian children develop cancer every year. Out of this number, about 38% present for specialist care in Ghana.
World Child Cancer in paternship with the Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, is working to develop a centre of excellence for the West African Sub Region.
Sources of funding for World Child Cancer in Ghana includes UBS Optimus Foundation, DFID, Celgene, Tropical Health and Education Trust and the British Foreign School Society.
He also stated that a key programme activities carried out in Ghana on childhood cancer include;
1.Development of a centre of excellence in the West African Sub Region costing over $2 million.
2.Training of doctors and nurses on paediatric oncology:
a.Fellowship opportunities to train over 10 paediatric oncologists from Ghana and West Africa.
b.Fellowship opportunities for paediatric oncology nurse training.
c.Support training of pharmacist, surgeons, doctors and biochemical engineers abroad.
3.Capacity building of health professionals and Community Health Workers on early warning signs and symptoms in collaboration with Ghana Health Service in 16 regions. 350 health staff already trained in 10 districts of the Volta and Oti region.
4.Treatment support for investigations, transport and medications for vulnerable parents.
5.Hospital School Project: attachment of Ghana Education Service teachers to paediatric oncology unit wards to teach sick children in the ward.
As World Child Cancer continue to make positive impact on the lives of children, they are presenting these items worth over $10,000.00 to the KBTH and KATH oncology units to improve on early detection and management of childhood cancer in the county.
